COLLEGE ADMISSION

Preparing for college begins long before high school.  It begins in elementary school, where children are told at an early age that they will go to college. Some would argue it even begins earlier than that! The foundation you build around education will set the stage for the rest of your children’s lives.

For younger children, surround them with books.  Read to your children and get help early if you notice any social or academic problems.  Your school counselor is a great resource.

For middle school students, monitor their academic and social development.  Ensure that they are taking the most rigorous classes that they are capable of.  It is a great time to speak with the school counselor about classes your child should be taking in high school.

For high school students, monitor their academic progress toward college.  Ensure that they are taking the most rigorous classes, which will prepare them for college-level work.  Consider taking Advanced Placement courses, which are college preparatory classes or even participate in a Dual Enrollment program.

If you do not know about these programs, reach out to your children's school counselor. Remember the better prepared your children are for college, the easier it will be when they go.

FINANCIAL AID

Many families are worried about how they will pay for college and they have a right to be concerned!  According to the article on nerdwallet.com, student loan debt has surpassed 1.5 trillion dollars.  You can read the article here: Student Loan Debt. You do not have to be a part of the statistic.  Remember, planning early can help you reduce the cost of going to college.  October 1st opens the window so that you can begin applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Completing the FAFSA may allow you to be considered for many different grants and scholarships.  To learn more about the FAFSA, visit the Office of the US Department of Education at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/
